The Economy in Whitby
Whitby’s economy is largely fuelled by residents who in fact work in neighbouring Toronto, Ajax and Oshawa. General Motors Canada in Oshawa is a major employer for all of Durham Region.
Whitby also is the home of Sobeys, Patheon, Johnson Controls, Lear Corporation, Automodular Assemblies, McGraw-Hill Ryerson, and several others. While these organizations have contributed jobs, companies like Lear Corp. are suppliers to near-by General Motors.
In 2008 GM ceased operations at its Oshawa plant resulting in thousands of unexpected layoffs not only at GM but also at other GM suppliers.
